A lush wetland scene featuring a kingfisher, heron, ducks, water lilies, and a lizard in a detailed illustration.

This detailed wildlife illustration captures a vibrant wetland ecosystem bustling with activity. The composition is anchored by a large, pale grey heron standing prominently in the shallow water. To the left, a striking blue and orange kingfisher perches on a branch, while a butterfly rests near a cluster of large, soft-pink water lilies in the foreground. A variety of ducks swim gracefully through the water, adding life and movement to the background.

To the right, the scene is framed by dense, leafy foliage adorned with reddish-orange fruits. Resting on a submerged log in the bottom right corner is a textured brown lizard, blending into the earthy tones of the environment. In the distance, rolling hills or mountains are faintly visible against a soft, hazy sky, suggesting an expansive landscape beyond the marshy foreground.

The style is realistic and painterly, rendered with soft brushstrokes that emphasize the textures of feathers, petals, and leaves. The colour palette is rich and earthy, dominated by the greens of the marsh vegetation, the blues of the water, and the vivid pops of pink from the lilies. The overall mood is serene and observant, highlighting the quiet, interconnected beauty of a thriving aquatic habitat.

A detailed watercolor illustration of Australian wetlands featuring a blue kingfisher, a tall heron, ducks, and flora.

This highly detailed watercolor illustration depicts a vibrant Australian wetland scene teeming with wildlife. In the foreground, a large, graceful heron stands amidst pink water lilies, while various species of ducks swim in the shallow, clear water. A bright blue kingfisher with a fiery orange breast is perched prominently on a branch to the left, and a lizard rests on a log in the lower right corner, blending into the earthy textures of the foliage.

The composition is balanced, drawing the eye from the dense, leafy vegetation and fruit-bearing trees on the right across the serene pond to the vast, grassy marshland in the background. Subtle details like dragonflies, smaller birds in flight, and delicate aquatic plants create a sense of depth and ecological diversity. In the distance, soft blue mountains rise against a light sky, establishing a peaceful and expansive outdoor setting.

The color palette is rich and natural, dominated by the soft pinks of the lilies, the varied browns and greens of the marsh vegetation, and the striking electric blue of the kingfisher. The lighting suggests a bright, clear day, casting gentle reflections on the water's surface and highlighting the textures of the animals' feathers and the lizard's scales. The artistic style is that of a traditional naturalist painting, emphasizing precision and the realistic capture of local flora and fauna.

I was surprised to find this in a thrift store in St. John's, NL as Blue Opal is an Australian brand of puzzles and as far as I have been able to determine, there are no distributors in Canada for this brand (not that I've found). Perhaps someone visited Australia and purchased this puzzle there, or it was sent to someone here in Canada. I had to grab it when I saw it as this is a brand of puzzle we'd never done before - one that I'd been wanting to try. The pieces are thinner than Ravensburger or Cobble Hill but the fit is quite good. Pieces are snug, but not tight, enabling you to move sections around without them falling apart. The completed puzzle can also be picked up with no problem. We found this puzzle to be of average difficulty (others may find it more difficult). From water dragons to giant waterlilies, the wetlands of northern Australia are home to some of the most exotic animals and plants on earth. The superbly detailed painting by Australia's leading nature artist, Tony Oliver, captures all the beauty and wonder of these fascinating habitats. Informative notes by the artist (on the back of the box) further enhance the enjoyment of the illustration. Specially commissioned for Blue Opal this painting provides both a challenging puzzle and a work of art suitable for framing when completed.
