Olde World Map 2

Art by Hendrick Doncker
Holdson | 1000 pieces
A vintage-style double-hemisphere world map surrounded by ornate, colourful, historical illustrations.

The central focus is a vintage-style double-hemisphere map of the world presented on an aged, parchment-textured background. The two circular hemispheres depict the continents of the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia as they were understood during the age of exploration, complete with thin lines of latitude and longitude. The borders are marked with Latin text, including the phrase "NOVA TOTIVS TERRARVM ORBIS GEOGRAPHICA AC HYDROGRAPHICA TABVLA."

Surrounding the two map circles is a highly detailed, ornamental frame featuring vibrant illustrations. Each of the four corners features a portrait medallion of a historical figure, while the spaces between the map circles are filled with intricate scenes of mythological and symbolic figures, animals, and cherubs. The bottom center includes a scene of two seated figures, one of whom holds a celestial globe, framed by architectural elements and overflowing horns of plenty.

The colour palette is reminiscent of hand-tinted cartography from the 17th century. It features muted, earthy tones of beige and cream for the parchment background, contrasted with primary colours like deep red, cobalt blue, and golden yellow found in the ornamental borders. The overall mood is academic, historic, and classical, imitating the style of Dutch cartographic masterpieces from the golden age of mapmaking.
