Art by SALVADOR DALÍ
Springbok | 500 pieces | 1965
Surrealist circular painting depicting figures in period clothing with fragmented elements and ants on an orange backdrop.

The circular artwork features a central, arched alcove set against a vibrant, textured orange background that radiates outward. Inside this arched space, several figures stand in a line, reminiscent of 17th-century Spanish portraiture, wearing dark gowns and elaborate lace ruffs. Their forms appear semi-translucent or painterly, with some figures blending into the shadows or the surrounding brick-like texture of the archway.

Surrounding the central figures, the composition is dominated by surrealist motifs. Ants crawl along the left and bottom edges, near small, isolated puzzle-piece shapes and spoon-like forms that float in the lower foreground. The colors transition from a deep, warm orange at the top to a darker, shadowy base. Splatters and fluid, ink-like marks punctuate the edges, creating a sense of decay or disintegration that contrasts with the structured, historical appearance of the central group.

The medium appears to be an illustrative work, possibly a print or a lithograph by Salvador Dalí, indicated by the prominent artist signature and date "1965" at the top. The overall mood is dreamlike and unsettling, blending high-classical fashion with chaotic, fragmented imagery. The play of light creates a spotlight effect on the figures, while the outer areas of the circle are steeped in deeper, moody tones, emphasizing the depth and mystery of the scene.

This circular composition features a surrealist scene centered around a group of three figures. On the left, two figures wearing dark, ornate garments with wide, ruffled lace collars and hats stand prominently, with the leftmost person extending their hand to display a cluster of circular medallions. Beside them stands a third, reddish-toned figure, while a shadowy silhouette of a fourth person stands further back on the right, all contained within a sweeping, arch-like structure. The figures have a painterly, sketch-like quality, with blurred features and expressive brushwork.

Surrounding the central figures are various symbolic and unsettling elements. Swarms of small, dark insects, specifically ants, appear in the bottom foreground and along the left periphery, crawling across an abstract, textured landscape. Small, fragmented, and jagged shapes are scattered throughout, suggesting a sense of decay or disintegration. The background transitions from a bright, light-colored central arch to deep, muted tones of dark brown, grey, and ochre around the edges, creating a dramatic, vignette-like effect.

The overall aesthetic is distinctly surrealist, characteristic of Salvador Dali's style, complete with his signature and the date 1965 inscribed in the upper section. The colour palette is dominated by earthy oranges, browns, and dark greys, punctuated by the white of the lace collars and the contrasting red of the third figure's attire. The light appears to emanate from behind the central arch, casting soft shadows and highlighting the enigmatic, dreamlike atmosphere of the scene.

The central focus of this circular image is a trio of figures dressed in ornate, historical clothing with prominent white ruffs, standing together in front of a golden, arch-shaped opening. The figures are rendered with expressive, painterly brushstrokes, appearing somewhat somber or mysterious. To the right, the silhouette of another person stands in the shadow, casting a long, dark presence against the arched background.

Surrounding this central vignette is a surreal, dreamlike landscape that blends earthy, mottled tones with hints of blue and soft pink. The composition is circular, drawing the eye toward the center while the perimeter is populated with curious, small details. Clusters of ants appear scattered across the foreground and edges, a recurring motif that adds a sense of decay or obsessive detail to the scene. Other small, abstract shapes and organic forms drift through the negative space, enhancing the otherworldly atmosphere.

Technically, the image is a fine art print of a surrealist painting, characterized by a mix of detailed figurative work and hazy, atmospheric backgrounds. The colour palette is dominated by warm ochres, deep reds, and moody browns, balanced by the cool, light-blue glow of the archway. The signature of the artist and the year 1965 are inscribed prominently in black at the top of the circle, anchoring the work within a specific historical artistic movement.

Wonderful puzzle from 1965, which Dali produced exclusively for Springbok. Despite its age the puzzle has held up remarkably with pristine pieces and a box still in good shape. If you squint your eyes, you will see a bust of Voltaire.
